I Had No Idea This Behavior Was So Common Among Children with Autism — Now I Know How to Help!

Wandering is common among neurotypical toddlers and young children, and it is often short-lived — however, for children and adults with autism, the behavior can continue for years, with nearly fifty percent of all children on the autism spectrum engaging in the behavior.

Individuals on the spectrum often have difficulties with sensory input, communication, and safety awareness, which can lead to a tendency to leave a safe area or a guardian’s care. Unfortunately, wandering can result in a number of dangers, including traffic injuries and (most commonly) accidental drowning.

Learn more about wandering behavior, and what you can do to help a misplaced child or adult on the spectrum in this video.

Even if you don’t come across a wandering child with autism, you can still help prevent this dangerous behavior. By donating through our Gift That Gives More™, you can help us save lives.
